Job purpose

The Support Staff provides full scope, residential care to “at risk youth” under the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. This is inclusive of maintaining the functionality of the home and daily operations, as well as initiating therapeutic programming for the persons served.


Duties and responsibilities

Daily Expectations

  • Cook

  • Clean

  • Administer Medication

  • Drive persons served to appointments, school, etc.

  • Work independently and as a member of a team

  • Answer phones professionally and pass along messages

  • Documentation – daily log, incident reports, budget sheets, appointment notes, etc.

  • Assist Resource Manager or Senior Staff with any additional tasks, as requested

Initiative

  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn and take on additional tasks to continue their professional development and assist their team

Job Knowledge

  • Demonstrates an understanding of working with high-risk youth and complex trauma

  • Utilizes appropriate methods - i.e. conflict resolution, risk management, person centered approaches, restitution, etc.   

Interpersonal Relationships/Cooperation/Positivity

  • Advocates on behalf of the person served to ensure that their needs are being met within the program – consulting with their Resource Manager as needed.

  • Responds positively and utilizes constructive feedback from coworkers and supervisors and incorporates it into their practice. 

  • Creates a positive work environment for their co-workers.

Attendance and Flexibility

  • Shows up on time and for the duration of their shift

  • Understands the importance of consistency in scheduling for our persons served

  • Understands the need to be flexible in resource assignment to best support the agency as a whole

Creativity/ Therapeutic Programming

  • Demonstrates creativity in working with our persons served and addressing any concerns at their resources

  • Programming – plan, document, execute, and reflect on client-focused strength-based therapeutic activities

Policy Awareness

  • Stays informed on all agency policy and procedures 

Self-Care Practices

  • Practices and models effective self-care both on and off shift


Qualifications

All applicants must be at least 19 years of age

All applicants must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and a cell phone

All employee file requirements as outlined in the employment manual and as amended

Additional experience or training considered assets:

  • Experience working with crisis management – working with individuals with extreme behaviors and/or mental health concerns

  • Experience with the age range 10-18 years old

  • Computer Skills - Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

  • Experience with medication administration

  • Experience in an administrative/managerial role

  • Degree/Diploma in a related field – Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Education, etc.

Working conditions

This position requires the ability to work with extremely challenging persons served with a wide range of behaviors.

This position requires the employee to work 24-hour shifts and holidays.


Physical requirements

This position requires the employee to both sit and stand for long periods of time.

This position may also require the employee to go for long periods of time without regulated breaks.
